Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teen years, and joined National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few days, she concluded that the school was not suitable for her. Ford then applied for a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was admitted on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler as a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was seen in television programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate's regular involvement in the theatre brought her into the Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy that became part of her resume in 1996.
